The
Wildland Solutions Residual Dry Matter (RDM) Photo-Guide
was developed to meet the needs of ranchers, technicians and agency
personnel who wish to effectively manage RDM levels of California
annual grassland range-types. It has been used extensively as
a reference aid by individuals teaching range management and water
quality short courses within California Annual rangeland vegetation
types.
The
RDM photo guide is based on the basic principles presented by
Hormay in 1942 for the judgment of forage utilization on California
annual type rangelands. This new revision incorporates high quality
photographs and easy to understand narrative descriptions.
The
photo guide is not intended to replace clipping and weighing of
RDM; its goal is to increase the effectiveness of monitoring efforts.
Although it is designed for field use, the field guide also serves
as an important aid when communicating Prescribed Grazing Specifications
and management objectives related to RDM needs. As a planning
tool, the representative photos and narrative descriptions will
assist individuals who need to be on the "same page" when discussing
what is expected with various objectives relating to RDM.
